What is the most common gas in the air we breathe?
Hints
- It makes up about 78% of Earth's atmosphere
- Plants need it to grow.
- Its chemical symbol is N.
Reveal the answer
Answer: Nitrogen
Also accepted: Nitrogen gas
Most people guess oxygen, but oxygen makes up only about 21% of the air. Nitrogen makes up around 78%, with the last 1% mostly argon plus tiny amounts of carbon dioxide and other gases. Our bodies breathe nitrogen in and out without using it. Plants need it to grow, though, which is why it's a key ingredient in fertiliser.
