Which instrument is played without being touched?

Hints

  1. It's electronic, not acoustic.
  2. The player moves their hands through the air near two antennas.
  3. It's named after its Russian inventor, Leon Theremin.
Reveal the answer

Answer: Theremin

Also accepted: The theremin, Thérémin, Termenvox

The theremin was invented in 1920 by Russian physicist Leon Theremin. It has two antennas: moving one hand near the vertical antenna changes the pitch, and moving the other near the loop antenna controls the volume. Your hands disturb the electromagnetic fields around the antennas, so you never touch the instrument at all. Its eerie, wavering sound became famous in old sci-fi and horror movie soundtracks.
